improve battery life with cydia

Go to cydia, install privacy, add cydia source, install compiledhosts

Improve battery life for jailbroken iPhones
iPhone
Problem: The battery on my jailbroken iPhone drains quite rapidly (requiring a recharge every other night, or even more frequently).

Diagnosis: A number of App Store and Cydia applications report usage data surreptitiously to online servers. Aside from the invasion of privacy, such activities also keep the iPhone and network connections active, requiring energy and draining the battery.

Remedy: Install Saurik's PrivaCYread this analysis, and then install a new /etc/hosts file on the iPhone.

Requirements: A jailbroken iPhone.

Tested: iPhone 3GS (US), OS 3.0.1. I have not tested each of the above remedies separately.

Results: Before, ould drain about 50% of the battery on a day with (primarily) data usage. After: Drains 5% to 10% a da

Compiled Application List

To use the compiled list or any entries on this blog, you need a jail-broken iPhone with Cydia or OpenSSH installed.

Cydia:

Add the Cydia source: cydia.i-phone-home.net (Manage" then "Sources", click "Edit" then "Add)

Manual:

- connect to the iPhone via SSH/SFTP
- backup your existing /etc/hosts file to be safe, the compiled file below is a drop in replacement
- update the existing hosts file at /etc/hosts with the individual entries or complete list
- save, changes are immediate, but some information may be cached. Reboot if necessary

Compiled application list version 0.50.9, updated as of 05/08/09:http://textbin.com/1503i
